|Cllr Chris Irvine quit the Conservative Party so that he could work as the agent to Rochester and Strood former MP Mark Reckless, who triggered a by-election when he resigned as a Conservative and joined UKIP, the party which got the most votes in Medway in the recent European Parliament election.
Cllr Irvine said what he described as the 'tipping point' was his opposition to the 5,000 home Lodge Hill housing development at Hoo Peninsula. "For me deciding to leave the party was an independent decision, the tipping point was really Lodge Hill. For me it's not a credible decision. It's a slap in the face for residents who are all up in arms about the decision. I just couldn't sit on the bench with those people any longer."
