Notes

George Rottenbury was born in England 13-8-1819. He was brought out (to Australia)as an Assisted Migrant by Robert Campbell to work as a stonemason on Campbell's property, "Duntroon", on the Canberry Plains near Queanbeyan, NSW. This is now the Australian Defence Academy in the nations capital Canberra. His wife Marriane and their 2 daughters came with him. They arrived in Sydney 12-2-1849 on the "Walter Morrice".

Robert Campbell also gave the land and made other contributions towards the building of the St John's Church of England, the first church in the district in what has now become the Canberra suburb of Reid. The first school was built next to the church. Other family members have also been notable contributors to the Church over the years.

While George was not there for the building of the original church, he may have worked on the new tower designed by Edmund Blackett and built between 1866 and 1870, and the later spire completed in 1878. His daughter Caroline married Richard Robert Troy (son of a convict) there in 1859. George and Marianne Rattenbury and their son George Henry Rottenbury and his wife Eliza Jane Kaye are buried in the historic grounds of the little church. The kids probably went to the school as it’s only 3kms to "Duntroon". For those visiting Canberra, a visit to St John's Church and the first school in the district is well worth a visit.

I have been given a copy of the England 1841 Census which shows George Rottenbury snr, agricultural labourer aged 65, wife Dinah 60, son John 20 blacksmiths apprentice, and Judith Symons 65, Independent, all living in the one house  at Bickington. I am assuming that Judith is a sister to either George or Dinah.
